Believe me, hiring managers know what a job description is… they have seen thousands of resumes. While the HR/hiring authority’s goal is to screen resumes and identify qualified candidates, the person doing the screening, well, is a person—and no one enjoys being “bored to death,” especially not by sifting through long-winded resumes that regurgitate all-too-familiar job descriptions. Here is a little secret: Many hiring managers actually write job descriptions. So, you are not doing them (or yourself) any favors by including a sea of bullets with your daily job accountabilities. Understand your resume’s job is not to give away every little detail of what your job entailed. No siree, Bob.

If you’re a developer, you probably need to include your github.

Follow the “one-item-to-a-line” format: Company Name Location Dates Job Title. If you’ve held more than one position for the same company, repeat the above lines for each and every position. Accomplishments should be listed separately for each title.

Your LinkedIn account. Twitter/Facebook/Pinterest/etc. account? Only include social media if it will enhance your prospective client’s opinion of you, not because you hear that you should. A good test of this is: a) Am I my full professional self on social media? and b) Am I interesting on social media?

Do I include a GPA? GPAs on PhD students’ resumes are less common. Some industries, like management consulting, require them but most do not.

Too many little hitches like this add up to a document that is difficult to read, which distracts the reader from the content and creates a bad impression. Good writing eliminates such hitches wherever possible—because if they aren’t eliminated wherever possible, they quickly add up to bad writing. Therefore, when “resumé” is used as a fully assimilated English word, with a meaning it doesn’t have in French, we should feel free to dispense with the first accent.

5. Work samples. There are several ways to include work samples in your resume: “See my full portfolio on” Attach work samples along with your resume to the email Since many clients will look at your website from their computers, include a selection of links directly to your previous clients/work/products Add a second page to your resume with thumbnails of your projects (note: this works only if you’ve got a visual product) Should you include work samples even if people don’t ask for them? YES.
